Modern Big Wheel

Modern Big Wheel

Title: Modern Big Wheel
Composition: Worm's Eye View
Aperture: 5.6
Shutter Speed: 1/500
Exposure: P Auto
Description:
This is a shot of the front tire of my wife's motorcycle. It reminded me of back in the day when I used to have a Big Wheel.  I partially converted the photo to B&W. I think that the B&W sky looks neat, while still getting a bit of that blue of the sky in the reflections from the chrome. With the way the sun hits the bike, the purple has turned to black.

Implied Lines

Implied Lines

Title: Parallel Lines
Composition: Implied Lines
Aperture: 4.5
Shutter Speed: 1/1000
Exposure: P Auto
Description:
I was waiting at the gas station when I noticed that the shadow from the gas awning was running parallel to the curb. I thought it was a bit of implied line from the shadow and the actual line from curb. I also think that the shadow and curb have high contrast; that helps draw focus to that area.

Anachronism/Rule of Thirds

Anachronism/Rule of Thirds

Title: Anachronism
Composition: Rule of Thirds
Aperture: 2.8
Shutter Speed: 1/750
Exposure: P Auto
Description:
I was dirving through town and I noticed that one of the buildings near downtown Aberdeen was getting a facelift. After they removed part of the "new" facade, they revealed an old brick advertisement that looks almost brand new. You can see a few of these on other buildings around town, but nothing in this good of shape. It's anachronism because you have the modern skyline next to an advert from the 30's or 40's.

Waiting/Bird's Eye View

Waiting/Bird's Eye View

Title: Waiting
Composition: Bird's Eye
Aperture: 2.8
Shutter Speed: 1/750
Exposure: P Auto
Description:
I was taking photos of the skyline in Aberdeen and I had happened to look down and see my wife impatiently waiting for me to hurry up.

  1. Photo 1: value, worms eye: This is a wonderfully clear shot. the B&W really helps to emphasis the bike.
Photo 2: lines, implied and actual lines: the lines on the ground are a really good way to have the eye follow down the piece, however the main thing that is looked at is the buildings and the wall, although they lead in a line themselves and so the viewer ends up in the same place the lines on the ground would lead them anyway. Cool!
Photo 3: emphasis, rule of thirds. This is a very cool shot! The green on the sign really comes out nicely against all of the neutrals in the background. The rule of thirds works out very nicely here between the buildings and such.
Photo 4: emphasis, bird’s eye. What can I say..there you have it!

  2. Photo 1-
    Element: shapes
    Principle: emphasis

I like that it is only partially black and white but keeping the reflections of the colors in the wheel, it looks really awesome like that. Maybe lighten the sky up a bit to make the bike stand out even more?

    Photo 2-
    Element: Value
    Principle: Contrast

There is so much contrast and value in this photo it really makes the colors pop and the lines created by the sidewalk and the bricks really keep your eye moving. I think it would look a bit better if the top part was cropped just a bit so the sky wasn’t showing. :)

    Photo 3-
    Element: Lines
    Principle: Repetition

I see the rule of thirds and i also see leading lines. The repeated lines on the street and on the repetition of the lines and shapes on the stuff in front of the sears sign really keeps the picture unified :)

I think maybe a bit more contrast or partial black and white like your first one to put more emphasis on the sign would make the rule of thirds stand out more.

    Photo 4-
    Element: Space
    Principle: Emphasis

Great picture of bird’s eye view, I like the depth of the picture and my eye goes straight to the car.

No way to improve this that I can see :) looks great the way it is.

  3. Photo1: Value Worms Eye. I love how you can see all the detail of the bike and the shades and values created by the mechanics is really nice! I really couldn’t tell the black and white until I read your explanation so perhaps adjusting the levels to give it more contrast will help make it more apparent.

Photo2: I really like the all the different values in this photo. From the colors of the gas station to the shadows its really a interesting and fun photo. I also like all the different textures that are picked up from the different surfaces. I’m really torn though if its implied or actual line, maybe capturing less of the curb and more of the shadow would help.

Photo3: I love the old school feel of the brick wall mural matched with the more modern structures in the back. I really like the bright colors but maybe the sky is a little over exposed. Perhaps darkening it just a bit would help it look a little less blown out.

Photo4: Really good birds eye view and the colors are really nice, nothing is to light or to dark. Perhaps showing the ledge of where you were standing would give the photo more depth and help it be less flat.
