COD Modern Warfare 2 Free Multiplayer on Steam

Posted by A Gaming Moose

If you haven't played Modern Warfare 2 online multiplayer yet, this weekend is your lucky day. Steam is offering a 3 day pass to online multiplayer this weekend starting sometime today (April 8th).The game will be free to play presumably until sometime on Sunday evening; there isn't a specified starting or ending time. Check the Store section of steam for the pre-load link and start downloading.

I finally get to try out some Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer; I'm still not happy about the lack of dedicated servers but at least I can try it for free. I played the single player on the console at the local game center, but I was unimpressed with much of it: Why helllooo red jam smeared all over the screen.. why couldn't that have gone the route of L4D2 blood smears?

I'm going to give multiplayer a solid try, but I'm not expecting it to change my mind on purchasing Modern Warfare 2. Plus, I'm probably going to get rocked by all the people with their weapons unlocked.

Modern Warfare-2 PC has matchmaking-not-Dedicated Servers

Posted by A Gaming Moose

modern-warfare-2Well the good news was that the PC version Modern Warefare 2 wasn't being delayed, but it is being overshadowed by the announced lack of dedicated servers. Yeah, stop and think about that for a second; a PC game that in the past has relied solely on dedicated servers is going to nothing but matchmaking. Modern Warfare 2 is now going to be reliant on the new matchmaking service called IWnet and will not allow users to host their own servers. IWnet will run in conjunction with Steam to bring matchmaking to Modern Warfare 2.Bowling said that an official announcement will come from Valve regarding how the Steam integration of Modern Warfare 2.

The lack of dedicated servers and a server browser means that the player will be reliant on IWnet. The new matchmaking service will match players of same rank and will provide private matches. A (small) upside is that Modern Warfare 2 will not use crappy Punk Buster for anti-cheat (it never works correctly and is the bane of my existence) but will use Valve Anti-Cheat (VAC).

The lack of dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2 PC is a blow; the whole point in playing a PC games is the ability to host your own and run mods and custom maps. There is little information on how Infinity Wards matchmaking is going to work with mods (doubtful). Bowling maintains that the new matchmaking service for Modern Warfare 2 is going to be a boon to the PC gaming community. A better system would be to emulate the L4D matchmaking. hardcore PC gamers can host their own servers and matchmaking can place you on those servers.

Personally, I have never been a fan of matchmaking services on the PC; If I did, I would play a console.

Call of Duty 4 Dedicated Server

Posted by A Gaming Moose

So this really isn't anything that is related to Company of Hero Videos, but it is computer gaming related. So along with my Team Fortress 2 dedicated server, I also host a Call of Duty 4 dedicated server. It is mostly used by the local Treasure I-Lan crew here in Aberdeen SD. It is a 24 man server that mostly runs Team Death Match.

As for why I don't have any Company of Hero Videos this week is because of summer courses, it got really crazy with trying to get a six page paper and a twelve paper "final" for my Political Science 250 class.

I will do another post with some awesome pictures from a awesome Jeep goes Beep Beep game from a week or two ago. It was crazy, and Jeeps don't do much damage against Wermacht Headquarters, but they are fun :D .

So here is an awesome little banner for the Call of Duty 4 server in Aberdeen. It usally sees a lot of usage during the evening when all the local kid's play. All the info (IP address, port, etc) should show up in the image banner. The server primarily runs domination as the gametype (due to popular demand) So hit it up and enjoy!
